Payroll Apprentice (0829)

PKF Francis Clark have an exciting opportunity for a Payroll Apprentice in our Truro office.

The successful candidate will provide payroll services for PKF Francis Clark clients.

Your responsibilities 

  • Using IRIS Payroll Professional software to run weekly, monthly and quarterly payroll runs, for clients with anything up to 100+ employees
  • Developing and maintaining client relationships to deliver excellent service
  • Administering Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) and Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP) schemes and maintaining all required data
  • Processing starters and leavers
  • Completing various forms for internal administration and as required by HMRC
  • Processing year end payroll procedures, such as producing P60’s and P35’s
  • Keeping the Payroll Manager briefed on workflow, deadlines and any issues
  • Undertaking general administration work, such as electronic filing etc.
  • Administering client’s Work Place pension scheme, to include file uploads to multiple pension portals.

Knowledge, skills and attributes

  • Educated to 3 A Levels (A-C) or equivalent (not general studies), with GCSE’s (A-C) including Maths and English.
  • Comfortable working to challenging deadlines on a regular basis
  • Accurate, numerate, with a methodical and organised approach to work
  • Able to deal with a wide range of clients in a polite and professional manner, predominantly by phone and e-mail
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • IT literate and able to use Microsoft Word, Outlook and particularly Excel, in capturing data and generating reports
  • Some work experience in business or an accountancy practice is desirable, but an aptitude for the work is more important
  • Investigative and problem-solving nature


  • As part of this role you will be completing the Payroll Administration Apprenticeship Level 3
  • The training will be completed by an online training provider and study time will be allowed
  • Full support for technical training and career development from a Payroll manager and other members of the team
  • Opportunities to later progress and gain further qualifications are available for the right candidates.
